ALPINEMIST KENNELS

AlpineMist Kennels is CKC registered since the Summer of 2008 and I am located in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.

I have been around dogs all my life and fell in love with berners in the 1980’s and shiba’s in 1990’s.  Jas joined my family of Boarder Collie’s (Amber and Sarah) in the fall of 2001.  She is a very typical aloof Shiba Inu and makes no bones of telling the others in the household that it is her house and they have to abide by her rules.

My first berner (Maggie) was a cross that I adopted from a rescue agency in 2002 when she was 6 months old.   Jas took Maggie under her wing and they because inseparable in spite of the size difference.  Maggie had been physically abused and both back legs were broken so severely that she had to have her rear legs pined, in addition to the leg problems she also developed a seizure disorder. Unfortunately she had to be helped over the Rainbow Bridge at the tender age of 5 because of spinal problems.

Cricket joined our household in July 2005. She had such a hard time being delivered that she dislocated a back kneecap and unfortunately it wasn’t able to be fixed right away and the surgeon that needed to do the surgery was in Calgary.  Little Cricket became an instant love of my mother and any time the two were together they were inseparable.  Just before her first birthday she was finally old enough and fully grown to have the surgery on her knee.

In the late spring of 2007 I started putting out inquiries about getting a pure-breed Bernese Mountain dog that I could show and I was one of the lucky people that managed to find a great breeder that had just whelped a litter on July 2nd.   After several e-mails and phone calls I was told I could have the last little girl in the litter

In November 2007 a 6 week old berner boy was surrendered to the Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Canada and needed a foster home.  I volunteered because I already had one pup what was one more, right?  Tobi had a rough start in life and he really needed the stability of a family and an older sister so little Tobi came home with me, he soon settled in like he had always been there and when the opportunity came to keep him I just couldn’t let him go.

KoKo is my first black/tan Shiba and blends in with the berners – I keep telling people she is just a miniature berner but they just don’t believe me.  She joined our household in December of 2008 at 14 weeks and never considered herself to be smaller or less important.  She started out with the statement that “I’m here and I’m here to stay – so accept that!”

Liesel-Marie entered my household in January 2009.  She came from the Werlwind Kennels near Portland, Oregon.  When Liesel was handed to me my first thought was “she is gorgeous”.

Fritz was born April 12, 09 in a Missouri puppy mill.  He was rescued by the BARC group out of the US the second weekend of August just before his 4 month birthday.  The next weekend he came home to me.  Fritz is a lively boy that is playing for the first time in his life and adores his older sister Liesel.  The two of them are seldom far apart and always into some type of trouble.

My berners are CKC and AKC registered and compete in both Canada and the United States.   Both HeidiRose and Tobi earned their Canine Good Neighbour award in July, 2007.  HeidiRose received her CD title in November 2008 and Tobi completed his in February 2009.  HeidiRose and Tobi both completed their rally-obedience titles in March 2009 with three consecutive qualifying scores one weekend.   HeidiRose obtained her Canadian championship in June 2009 and is now shown as a Special.  HeidiRose has started agility and both HeidiRose and Tobi are starting to work on carting.  KoKo and Liesel obtained there Canine Good Neighbour awards in June 2009.  KoKo had four points towards a Canadian title before she was spay and is currently working on her rally-obedience title, she loves to hunt and I am working on hunt training with her.  Liesel has four points towards her Canadian championship and completed both her rally and obedience titles at 10 months at a Berner Booster.   Fritz is just starting his training in obedience and rally-obedience and will go for his Canine Good Neighbour award in the spring of 2010.

I am a member of the CKC and Bernese Mountain Dog Club of Canada and I’m on the fostering list for BARC Inc.  I am also on several yahoo groups for Berners.

Of course no one can guarantee that any dog purchased will be show quality but I do not believe in re-homing my dogs unless extreme circumstances arise.  Once a dog enters my home it is there for life and I strongly believe that no matter what all dogs purchased will remain an interregnal part of my household and will compete in different activities right along my other dogs. All my dogs (rescue included) actively participate in trials of all different types.
